  • Oregon Asthma Surveillance Report 2007 (pdf)
    A compilation of data on asthma in Oregon. This report includes information on the following elements: Asthma prevalence (including prevalence estimates for Oregon, Oregon counties, and the U.S.), Pediatric asthma, Emergency department or urgent care visits for asthma, Hospitalizations for asthma (including hospitalization rates for Oregon, Oregon counties, and the U.S.), Deaths due to asthma, Asthma control, Asthma management, Risk factors for asthma, and Asthma in the Medicaid population.  
     
  • Geographic Disparities in Pediatric Asthma Control Among Oregon Children on Medicaid (pdf)
    This report identifies counties in Oregon experiencing higher rates of poorly controlled asthma among children ages 0-17 years old who are on the Oregon Health Plan. Claims data for emergency department visit rates, hospitalization rates, and rates of a low medication ratio were mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and included in this report. Maps are available for the following three age groups: 0-17, 0-4, and 5-17. This report was developed with guidance from the Oregon Asthma Disparities Leadership Team, comprised of representatives from a broad range of health systems and community based organizations and agencies.  
     
  • Focus Group Report: People with Asthma & Caregivers of Children with Asthma (pdf)
    The Oregon Asthma Program conducted four focus groups in Fall 2007. The groups included two groups with people with asthma and two groups with caregivers of children with asthma.  The focus groups were conducted in Portland and Eugene. Topics include: Being diagnosed with asthma; Perceived severity of asthma, especially compared with other diseases such as diabetes or heart disease; Asthma control and management; Interactions with the healthcare system and providers; Asthma education; Community support; and Smoking and secondhand smoke  
     
  • U.S. Asthma Data Fact Sheet (pdf)
    Asthma ranks among the most common chronic conditions in the United States, affecting an estimated 14.9 million persons in 1995 and causing over 1.5 million emergency department visits, about 500,000 hospitalizations, and over 5,500 deaths.

  • Oregon Asthma Leadership Plan: The goals identified in the Oregon Asthma Leadership Plan help identify critical areas of focus to improve the quality of life for all Oregonians with asthma.  
     
  • The Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon: Indicators for Quality Care in Health Systems. This guide has been developed to steer efforts to improve asthma management and to define appropriate indicators for monitoring the quality of medical care provided to Oregonians with asthma.

  • Technical Specifications for Quantifying Measures in The Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon (the Guide). The 'Tech Specs' (pdf) is a companion to the Guide that was developed by participants in the Asthma Data Workgroup, which is composed of provider groups, representatives from health plans and systems, academic institutions, governmental agencies, and community organizations.   • DMAP-QPI Asthma 2007 Performance Measure Specifications (pdf) -- The Oregon Asthma program has been collaborating with the Division of Medical Assistance Programs (DMAP- the state agency that administers Medicaid) - Quality and Performance Improvement Workgroup (QPI) to measure two of the indicators in The Guide to Improving Asthma Care in Oregon. These technical specifications describe the methods to be used by participating Fully Capitated Health Plans in measuring their health plan claims data (based on Oregon's Technical Specifications - see above). "A View of Asthma" in Oregon Periodical
"A View of Asthma in Oregon" is a periodical newsletter published by the Oregon Asthma Program.  Each issue looks in depth at different aspects of asthma and asthma management.

CD Summary Newsletters: Asthma
The CD Summary is a publication of the Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology (ODPE), distributed every two weeks to health care providers and various public health agencies inside and beyond Oregon; media representatives; medical laboratories; hospitals; and other health professionals and institutions. Articles are contributed by staff members of the various programs within ODPE.

    • September 20, 2005 - Examines the role of air pollution in causing and exacerbating asthma, particularly in children, and describe efforts in Oregon to track links between asthma and the environment.

    • February 29, 2000 - This Oregon update features a review of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program's (NAEPP) Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. Included is a summary table for the Management of Asthma in Adults and Children.

Keeping Oregonians Healthy is a statewide report that summarizes information about the burden of chronic diseases and related risk factors among Oregonians. It provides information about how many people in our state are affected by various diseases or conditions that can cause them. It also reviews differences in rates of these conditions by county, by socioeconomic status, and between racial and ethnic communities in the state. Finally, it describes effective strategies through which we can manage and even prevent chronic disease among the state's population.
