Sediment in Caspian Sea

Sediment clouds the waters of the northeast section of the Caspian Sea in southern Russia (left) and Kazakhstan (right). Streaks of brown on the left shore mark where the Volga River empties into the sea. The Ural River, top center, also feeds into the world's largest inland sea. This section of the Caspian Sea is surrounded by the Caspian Depression — flat, dry lowlands that appear sandy brown in this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image. The Terra satellite captured this image on September 25, 2003.
