If you’re going to travel during the holiday season – particularly out of state – and your Oregon driver license or identification card will expire during the holidays, plan ahead before you go to DMV.

Oregon has changed from over-the-counter to centralized issuance of driver licenses and ID cards. At the DMV, customers receive an interim card valid for 30 days. The plastic cards are issued from a central location and mailed to their homes.

Customers typically receive their plastic cards five to 10 business days after their visit to DMV. It may take longer if a card is returned to DMV because of any postal forwards on the customer’s home address.

Although the interim card has the same information as the permanent card, it is not a secure form of ID. It is intended as a “receipt” showing that customers have applied for Oregon driving privileges or an ID card. DMV recommends that Oregonians bring extra ID if they need to travel with an interim card.

The interim card fulfills state law requiring that drivers carry a license at all times while driving. Oregon law enforcement agencies can verify an interim card electronically.  However, banks, merchants, airports, car rental companies, taverns and other businesses and agencies have a right to reject any form of ID.

So DMV advises customers to either renew their licenses at least three weeks before trips, or to wait until after their trip to renew at DMV. Alternately, customers with an interim card could carry additional ID, such as a passport.

Customers can check their current cards for the expiration date; DMV mails renewal reminder postcards to customers 60 days before their card expires.
