Renewing a Commercial Driver License (CDL)

As of October 1, 2004, DMV issues and renews licenses for 8 years only. Four (4) year mail-in renewals are no longer processed.

Renewal Notice Reminders

Renewal notice reminders are mailed to most CDL holders two months prior to expiration of the driver license. Renewal reminders for CDL holders with a HAZMAT endorsement will be mailed at least 90 days prior to the expiration date of the driver license to allow time to complete a TSA criminal background check. If you do not receive a renewal notice in the mail, you may still renew your CDL in person at a DMV office up to 4 months before expiration.

How to Renew a CDL

To renew your CDL, you must do so in person at a DMV office, and you must:

Present your renewal reminder card and/or your current license;
If you are 50 years old (or older) on the renewal date of your driver license, pass a DMV vision screening test;
Provide proof of your full legal name;
Provide proof of your legal presence in the U.S., identity and date of birth;
Provide proof of your Social Security Number (SSN);
If your address has changed, provide proof of your Oregon residence address;
If you have a Hazardous Material Endorsement on your CDL, pass a HAZMAT knowledge test and pay the testing fee and have paid for and passed a TSA criminal background check within the past year;
Certify that you meet all Federal requirements if you drive a vehicle in interstate commerce;
Present a valid medical certificate and, if indicated on the certificate, a valid waiver or exemption; and
Pay the renewal fee;

You will be issued an interim card to use until you receive your actual license in the mail.
