Sea of Okhotsk and Sakhalin Island, Eastern Russia

Far eastern Russia is covered in snow, ice, and clouds in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from January 26, 2003. In the center of the image is the Sea of Okhotsk, the boundaries of which are marked by Sakhalin Island at image center, Japan’s Hokkaido Island to the south (not visible), the Kuril Islands to the southwest (not visible), and the Kamchatka Peninsula to the east (not visible). A small portion of the Sea of Japan is visible between Sakhalin Island and mainland Russia at the bottom of the image.
