Wilson Dam Bascule Bridge Replacement

Lauderdale County, Alabama

TVA has issued a final environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact for replacing the bascule bridge at Wilson Dam.  This bridge provides access to the main lock chamber and lock operations building and, due to its age and condition, its continued long term operation is unsafe and unreliable without major renovation.  TVA and the United States Army Corps of Engineers share responsibilities for various structural, maintenance, or operational features of Wilson Dam and associated locks, including the bascule bridge.  The Corps cooperated with TVA in the preparation of this environmental assessment.

Wilson Dam is a National Historic Landmark.  TVA and the Corps have designed the replacement bridge, which would be built downstream of the existing bascule bridge, to minimize impacts to the historic setting.  The existing bascule bridge would remain in place and continue to be available for access to the main lock area at least until the new bridge is completed.  Thereafter, following appropriate environmental review, a decision would be made regarding continued maintenance or disposition of the existing bascule bridge.
