NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS Sharon Snider Dec. 1, 1993 (301) 443-3285 PUBLIC MEETING ON HEARING AIDS The Food and Drug Administration will hold a public hearing in Rockville, Md., Dec. 6-7 to get comments on its plans to strengthen regulations governing the sale and distribution of hearing aids. The agency is proposing that hearing aid purchasers first be required to have a hearing exam by a qualified health professional licensed by the state. Current regulations require that consumers be examined by a physician, unless they sign an agreement to waive that requirement. In practice, many purchasers have waived the exam and thus have not been properly evaluated. The results are often hearing aids that do not work or fit properly. The public hearing will address questions such as: What should a hearing aid exam include? What qualifications should be required of the health professional doing the exam? Under what conditions, if any, should a consumer be allowed to waive the exam? Should repeat buyers have to be reexamined each time they buy a new hearing aid? Should hearing aids be available by mail order? The hearing will start at 9 a.m. in the Crowne Plaza Holiday Inn, 1750 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Md., near the Twinbrook Metro station. ####
