             NEW DEPUTY COMMISSIONER/SENIOR ADVISOR

     Mary K. Pendergast, Senior Advisor to the Commissioner of Food
and Drugs, has been appointed Deputy Commissioner/Senior Advisor of
the Food and Drug Administration.
     Pendergast has served as Senior Advisor to Commissioner David
A. Kessler, M.D., for almost three years, and has been responsible
for overseeing a number of high-priority projects such as
negotiations involving RU-486 and FDA's technical aid to public
health authorities in Russia. 
     As Deputy Commissioner/Senior Advisor, Pendergast will
continue in her responsibilities of coordinating special projects
for the commissioner and supervising crisis management and other
exceptionally sensitive activities of the agency. 
     Prior to becoming Senior Advisor, Pendergast was for more than
10 years Associate Chief Counsel for Enforcement at FDA.  She
joined the agency after serving as a lawyer with the Public Health
Division of the Department of Health and Human Services, and with
the Interagency Task Force on the Health Effects of Ionizing
Radiation.
     Pendergast received a bachelor's degree from Northwestern
University, a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law, and
an LL.M. from Yale Law School.
