TVA Staff Collecting Data for Flood Risk Assessment
April 30, 2008
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - TVA employees are surveying homes, buildings and other structures located downstream of Normandy Dam to gather data for use in assessing potential flood risk in the area.
The surveys, being done along the Duck River, will help TVA determine which structures would be affected in the event of flooding. Flood risk surveys are routinely conducted by TVA and are required to ensure potential flood damage information is current.
Data from the survey will be shared with local emergency management agencies and cities and counties to help them prepare for potential floods in the future.
The survey is expected to be completed by June 1.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self- financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 159 power distributors that serve approximately 8.8 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
