Suspicious Package Received at Penitentiary
Shortly after 9 a.m., Friday, a package received by Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem this morning was opened for routine inspection by a mail clerk and found to contain an unknown liquid substance.
Following safety protocols, the penitentiary notified Salem Fire, and the HazMat Team responded.
Oregon State Penitentiary's mailroom is outside the prison's secure perimeter in a building known as Residence Four. It is one of the prison's former staff residences located near State Street and the avenue that leads to the main penitentiary.
As a precaution HazMat cordoned off the area around Residence Four, and five staff people were temporarily displaced from their posts.
When HazMat entered the building, it was found that the substance was contained and had not spilled. The substance was turned over to the Oregon State Police for testing and investigation.
There was no disruption to penitentiary activities. There was no damage to property. Operations inside the penitentiary are normal, including visiting. The mailroom is back to full operation.
