ABSTRACT: The OLC Daybooks is a chronological file that allows Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) personnel to locate hard-copy versions of documents prepared by OLC from 1945 to the present.

PURPOSE: The OLC Daybooks are used as a means of retrieving hard copies of OLC documents for use in conducting OLC business or when requested by other Offices or Agencies or pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: The Office's Internet website (http://www.usdoj.gov) contains selected publically available documents from the OLC Daybooks beginning in 1992.  In addition, the published documents of OLC (1977 to the present) are located on Westlaw and Lexis.  The OLC Daybooks are available only to OLC personnel.

USE CONSTRAINTS: Restricted to OLC personnel for official use.

AGENCY PROGRAM: The Office of Legal Counsel assists the Attorney General in his function as legal advisor to the President and all the Executive Branch agencies.  The Office drafts legal opinions of the Attorney General and also provides its own written opinions and oral advice in response to requests from the Counsel to the President, the various agencies of the Executive Branch, and offices within the Department.  All Executive Orders and proclamations proposed to be issued by the President are reviewed by OLC for form and legality.  In addition to serving as, in effect, outside counsel for the other agencies of the executive branch, the OLC also functions as general counsel for the Department.

SOURCES OF DATA: The information contained in the OLC Daybooks consists of documents prepared by OLC.
