IMPROVED NUTRITION LABEL

FAT WON'T BE HIDDEN ON YOUR FOOD LABELS ANY LONGER ACCORDING TO HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON. HE ANNOUNCED THAT TRANS FAT WILL BE LISTED ON THE FOOD LABEL AS PART OF AN IMPROVED NUTRITION LABEL SO THAT CONSUMERS CAN CHOOSE "HEART-HEALTHY" FOODS:

"Today's initiative will not prevent heart disease alone, but it will empower Americans with more information so they will be able to make the smart decisions about what they eat. We're going to be able to continue efforts to provide consumers with information based on the best available science, so they will be able to make good decisions."

THIS NEW FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION RULE MEANS THAT NOW CONSUMERS CAN CHOOSE FOODS THAT WILL HELP LOWER THEIR INTAKE OF UNHEALTHY FATS AND CHOLESTEROL. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD TO HELP AMERICANS IMPROVE THEIR NUTRITION ACCORDING TO F-D-A COMMISSIONER DOCTOR MARK MCCLELLAN:

"The change in the nutrition label, as Secretary Thompson announced today, means that trans fat can no longer 'lurk' hidden in our food choices. Americans will be armed with better information to reduce their intake of trans fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, which could significantly lower the risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the America today."
