Academy Reviews Revised Medical Criteria for Evaluating Hearing Loss

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently published a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) 73 FR 47103 (August 13, 2008) to revise the criteria in the listing of impairments that they use to evaluate claims involving hearing loss. Academy staff is in the process of reviewing the NPRM document in the development of formal public comments that the Academy will submit before the established October 14, 2008, deadline. Advance Beneficiary Notice Deadline Extended to March 1, 2009

The Academy has just received notice that the deadline for the revisedAdvanced Beneficiary Notice or ABN (CMS-R-131) has been extended to March 1, 2009. It is recommended that the switch to the new form takeplace as soon as possible. Effective September 1, 2008, the revised Advanced Beneficiary Notice (CMS-R-131) is to be used when payment is expected to be denied when filing a Medicare claim. This form will replace the following forms: CMS-R-131G, CMS-R-131L and CMS-20007,otherwise known as the Notice of Exclusions from Medicare Benefits(NEMB). CMS Transmittal 1550

CMS releases Transmittal 1550 clarifying that audiologists will be required to be enrolled in Medicare and use their National Provider Identifiers (NPI) for services rendered by October 1, 2008. Those having their Provider Identifier Numbers (PINs) should be using their NPIs immediately. Read more...
