What's New

  • AgrAbility Quarterly Summer 2008 - The Roots of AgrAbility
On June 18, 2008 the Farm Bill was reauthorized by Congress, securing another eight years of funding for AgrAbility. To mark this occasion we are looking back on the past seventeen years of the USDA’s funding of AgrAbility, and our combined efforts to assist people with disabilities involved in production agriculture and their families.
  • AgrAbility Quarterly Spring 2008 - Tom Holm - Looking Back on an Idaho Farmer’s Journey
As Tom Holm drives his pick-up truck down the winding county road dividing his 4,000 acre farm, he can’t help but reflect on his life’s many accomplishments. With the backdrop of Idaho’s Grand Teton Mountain range surrounding him, he’s satisfied with the life farming has to offer. From a bicycle accident as a young boy to nearly going bankrupt in the late 1990’s, the mountains in the distance represent the many uphill battles he has overcome.

  • New innovation automatically connects PTO attachments to compact tractors
"John Deere introduced a new innovation that will help you switch from one attachment to another. The new iMatch AutoHitch, which follows in the footsteps of iMatch Quick–Hitch, takes operator ease and efficiency to a whole new level by eliminating the hassle and frustration of attaching PTO–powered implements to compact tractors." • Crops & Gardening - How Do I ... Build Raised Beds
Growing in raised beds has many advantages and it can be easier on aging backs and knees.  Interested, check out this helpful article from Hobby Farms. (5/08) (Link takes you to the Hobby Farms web site.)
  • Farmhouse Café at the 2007 National Training Workshop
On the first morning of our 2007 National Training Workshop (NTW) in Sacramento California we held a two-hour Farmhouse Café discussion intended to get all workshop attendees talking to each other about issues that matter to them as AgrAbility professionals, farmers, and stakeholders. A link to Café summary held at the workshop can be found off the Archive web page, under Events, 2007 NTW.
  • Client Story: Andy Byrd and Whippoorwhill Hollow
Becky Brightwell, project manager of AgrAbility in Georgia, often compares Georgia farmer and AgrAbility client Andy Byrd to Walt Disney.  While Andy Byrd is not a famous screen producer and Walt Disney was not an organic farmer with a disability, Andy, like Walt Disney, is a visionary. It was Andy’s vision that helped him create Whippoorwill Hollow Organic Farms all from the seat of his 4x4 wheelchair.
  • The Guide to Financing Business and/or Assistive Technology (PDF) offers funding resources available through public disability-related funding sources, private disability-related programs or charitable organizations, USDA, and the Small Business Administration. The Guide also provides numerous examples of how AgrAbility clients used the funding awarded (1/08)
