Intensive Summer Language Institutes for High School
This program provides U.S. high school students the opportunity to study critical foreign languages abroad in intensive six- to eight-week summer institutes. In 2006, 46 American students studied Chinese and Arabic in Beijing, Amman and Cairo. In 2007, the program expanded to 130 American students studying in China, Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco, with plans to increase the number of students in 2008.
Intensive Summer Language Institutes for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
This program awards scholarships to American university-level students (undergraduate and graduate) to participate in intensive overseas summer language study institutes. In FY 2006, 167 scholarships were awarded for beginning, intermediate and advanced study in Arabic, Indic and Turkic languages. In FY 2007, 363 scholarships were awarded and institutes in Chinese, Korean, Russian and Persian were added. In FY 2008, the program plans to award more than 500 scholarships. Open to American undergraduate and graduate students.
Intensive Summer Language Institutes for U.S. Teachers
This program sends U.S. critical-need language teachers abroad for intensive summer study. Six American teachers of Mandarin Chinese participated in intensive summer language institutes abroad in 2007. In summer 2008, intensive summer language institutes are planned for teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
