Wildflowers
The Olympic Peninsula's varied climate and topography supports a large number and variety of wildflowers. The Pacific Rhododendron is the Washington State flower. Wildflowers on the Peninsula extend through all live zones from sea level to the rocky crags of the highest peaks. There are several smaller endemic wildflowers that can only be found in the Olympic Mountains.
Piper's Harebell, Campanula piperi, one the Olympic's endemic flowers may be found in rock outcrops on the rugged slopes of the Olympic Mountains.
Bunchberry, Cornus canadensis, is a miniature flowering-dogwood that can cover the forest floor.
Jeffrey's Shootingstar, Dodecatheon jeffreyi, can be found in and near mountain meadows and streams.
The Pacific Rhododendron, Rhododendron macrophyllum, is Washington's state flower. This popular evergreen shrub blossoms in May in the lower elevations and in June at higher elevations.
