Public Services Division Chief Named

NLM Associate Director for Library Operations, Sheldon Kotzin, has announced the appointment of Martha Fishel as Chief of the Public Services Division (PSD).

Ms. Fishel has nearly thirty years of experience in public and technical services at NLM and has served as Deputy Chief of the Division since 1989. She has been Acting Chief since March 2006.

During her seventeen years in PSD Ms. Fishel has acquired a broad knowledge of interlibrary loan activities, reference services, preservation, collection management, and DOCLINE. More recently, she has been manager of the highly successful PubMed Central back file scanning project and has served on the Section 108 legislative study group, working on revising the section of the Copyright Law dealing with access to and preservation of digital material.

The Public Services Division offers a range of services for accessing the NLM's collection and information resources. Through the onsite Reading Room and an interlibrary loan network, PSD provides access to the world's largest collection of biomedical literature. Experts in preservation and collection maintenance support the library's mandate to preserve and provide access to its collection. A staff of information specialists offers reference and customer service assistance to health professionals, researchers, educators, and the public. PSD staff also organize NLM information for access through the World Wide Web, including consumer health information through MedlinePlus.
