Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Goli Ameri traveled to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) and Qatar from May 4 to May 8, 2008, to promote cultural and educational diplomacy in the region. She visited universities, engaged with Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) exchange program alumni, encouraged greater numbers of exchange students from the region to the United States, and reached out to the private sector in both countries.
Ameri met in U.A.E. with International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumni and officials at the IVLP Alumni Symposium in Dubai. She visited Abu Dhabi and met with Sheik Hahyan bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, U.A.E. Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of Zayed University, where she also conversed with female students about education and their aspirations. In addition, she met with students of the Higher Colleges of Technology and took a tour of the college’s advanced hi-tech facilities, including the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer.
In Qatar, Ameri delivered remarks at Qatar University at an event where University students read their prose and poems from a project titled “Qatar Narratives,” which was sponsored by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). At a meeting with Qatar Foundation representatives, she proposed partnering with the Foundation to host a youth conference for alumni of ECA’s Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program. Ameri also visited the Al Jazeera Childrens’ News Network and met with Qatari IVLP, Fulbright, and YES Program alumni.
