Introduction to Health Services Research : A Self-Study Course
Module 4: Search the Literature of HSR: Databases (Page 18 of 29)
Section 1: Health Services Research Databases and Information Resources
CRISP - Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects
Locating research projects underway by colleagues can be important to health services researchers. CRISP is a biomedical database system containing information on research projects and programs supported by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Patient-oriented research including epidemiologic and behavioral studies and outcomes research and health services research is covered. Clinical research in the form of Clinical Trials, Phase I and Clinical Trials, Phase II/III/IV are also indexed with those terms for easier searching.
HSRProj, discussed previously, is also worth reviewing for research projects.
More on CRISP
- Producer: Office of Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health - http://crisp.cit.nih.gov/
- Vendors:
- Topics in the database: Contains descriptions of more than 65,000 biomedical research projects that are currently in progress or recently completed and supported by the Department of Health and Human Services. Covers extramural projects, including grants, awards, research contracts, and cooperative agreements, as well as intramural programs conducted primarily by non-federal institutions and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other Public Health Service (PHS) agencies. Includes project identification and address of performing organization, principal investigators, funding, abstracts, and keyword. Includes records for each fiscal year in which a project is active, with each project showing its start and end date. CRISP records are also incorporated into HSRProj.
Exercise
- Visit the page and look for recent research on diabetics who are using the Web to report their blood sugar levels to their health care provider. What search terms did you use? After looking at a few records, did you find relevant research?
- Is the thesaurus helpful in providing additional terms you could use for searching for this topic? Why do you think Keywords were added to the database? Do they help or detract from the record?
- Can you contact the PI of a project to follow up with questions?
Discussion Questions
- After having examined the CRISP database, how useful is/would be the CRISP database in providing research information to your clientele? To yourself if you are a researcher?
- Are there any differences between HSRProj and CRISP? What are they?
