Argonne, U.S. Air Force sign agreement
for technical fellowship program
ARGONNE , Ill. (May 17, 2004) — Officials from the U.S.
Air Force and the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory
today signed an agreement that will open educational opportunities to
Air Force officers and civilian employees in technical fields.
The cooperative agreement is open to officers and civilians in nuclear,
chemical, biological sciences and engineering career fields, who will be
able to earn master's degrees and Professional Military Education (PME)
credit for Intermediate or Senior Service School through the program.
To begin in August 2005, the program combines specific assignments in
Argonne's research programs in homeland security and related technical
areas with concurrent enrollment in appropriate programs at the University
of Chicago, Northwestern University or the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Air Force students will be provided Argonne mentors from the scientific
staff during the assignment. The program will be managed by Argonne 's
Division of Educational Programs.
“This agreement is a triple play,” said Harold Myron, director of Argonne
's Division of Educational Programs. “The universities get quality students,
Argonne gets the talents of first-class researchers, and the Air Force
gets a more highly educated and skilled staff.”
One new student will join the program each year for two-year periods,
on assignment from the Air Force. Argonne will provide research opportunities
and office space for the students. No funds will be exchanged.
The nations first national laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory
conducts basic and applied scientific research across a wide spectrum of
disciplines, ranging from high-energy physics to climatology and biotechnology.
Since 1990, Argonne has worked with more than 600 companies and numerous
federal agencies and other organizations to help advance America's scientific
leadership and prepare the nation for the future. Argonne is operated by
the University of Chicago for the U.S.
Department of Energy's Office of Science.
