Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS)

Questionnaire

GHPSS comprises "core" country-approved questions designed to gather data on the following six topics among third-year health profession students:

Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking and Other Tobacco Use

• The number who have experimented with smoking cigarettes or used other forms of tobacco products
• The number who currently smoke cigarettes and other forms of tobacco
• Their age when they began smoking

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

• The extent of their exposure to smoking at home and other places
• Their knowledge of their schools’ official smoking policies in school buildings, clinics, and other public areas
• Their perceptions of the enforcement of the schools’ smoking policies

Training and Knowledge About the Health Effects of Tobacco Use

• Their knowledge of the adverse health effects of tobacco use
• Their awareness of nicotine replacement products
• The amount of cessation counseling training they have received to help patients quit smoking

Attitudes About Tobacco

• Their support for banning sales of tobacco products to minors
• Their support for banning  smoking in enclosed public places
• Their support for health professionals’ role in tobacco control
• Their support for training health professionals in cessation techniques to use with their patients

Cessation of Tobacco Use (If a Current Smoker)

• Severity of tobacco dependence
• Desire to quit smoking and using other tobacco products

Demographics

• Gender
• Age
• Year in school
