Cigarette Smoking-Attributable Morbidity—United States, 2000

The September 5, 2003, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
(CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains a
new report titled “Cigarette Smoking-Attributable Morbidity—United States,
2000." The study estimates the prevalence of people who are alive with diseases
caused by smoking.
The report is the first smoking-related morbidity data released by the CDC,
and provides a national estimate of people living with smoking-attributable
illness. The study found 8.6 million people in the United States have one or
more serious illnesses caused by smoking.
