MMWR Introduction

The Friday, October 12, 2001, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains a study titled “Cigarette Smoking Among Adults—United States, 1999.” According to the study, adult smoking rates fell from 25% in 1993 to 23.5% in 1999, and preliminary data for 2000 and for the first three months of 2001 indicate that rates will continue to fall to 23.3% and 22.3% respectively.
