Zambia - Food Insecurity

Map of Zambia
Map of Zambia

Regional Team: SWAN

Disaster Declared:
10/28/2005

Brief Description:
Poor rains and localized drought conditions during the 2004/2005 agricultural season resulted in widespread food insecurity in Zambia, particularly in Southern and Western provinces. In November 2005, the Zambia Vulnerability Assessment Committee (VAC) estimated that 1.4 million people would need food assistance through the next harvest in April 2006. On November 21, Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa declared a national disaster and appealed for international food assistance.

On October 28, 2005, the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka declared a sub-national emergency due to drought and food insecurity in Zambia. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Zambia to the Consortium for Southern Africa Food Security Emergency (C-SAFE) for nutritional surveillance and support to therapeutic feeding centers. In addition, OFDA contributed nearly $895,000 to increase the productive capacity of vulnerable households and expand nutritional monitoring through C-SAFE and other implementing partners.
