Mozambique - Food Insecurity

Map of Mozambique
Map of Mozambique

Regional Team: SWAN

Disaster Declared:
10/14/2005

Brief Description:
Poor rains and drought conditions during the 2004/2005 agricultural season resulted in food insecurity in the central and southern provinces of Mozambique. Food prices in markets rose to unaffordable levels for many people. In October 2005, a food security monitoring mission conducted by the Technical Secretariat for Food Security and Nutrition (SETSAN) determined that more than 801,000 people would require approximately 83,000 metric tons (MT) of food assistance until the next harvest in March 2006. On October 27, 2005, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique requested international assistance to provide additional food aid to the increasing number of vulnerable households.

On November 17, 2005, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires James L. Dudley declared a disaster for food insecurity in Mozambique.  In response, OFDA contributed more than $1 million to CARE and International Relief and Development (IRD) for drought response and mitigation programs.
