Regional Team: LAC

Disaster Declared:
10/07/2005

Brief Description:
On October 4, 2005, Hurricane Stan made landfall south of Veracruz, Mexico. Heavy rainfall associated with the storm caused widespread flooding in the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabsco, Puebla, Hidalgo, and Guerrero, resulting in 15 deaths and displacing more than 370,000 people.

On October 6, 2005, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio O. Garza Jr. declared a disaster due to the flooding. In response, OFDA provided a total of $200,000 through USAID/Mexico to the Mexican Red Cross and the Nature Conservancy for the local purchase and distribution of emergency relief supplies to affected communities.
