Disaster Declared: 05/15/2006
Brief Description: Heavy rains and flooding since January 2006 destroyed thousands of homes, washed away roads and bridges, and displaced thousands of families across much of northeastern
Colombia. According to the Government of Colombia (GOC), the flooding caused 112 deaths, injured 212 persons, and affected 127,000 others, across 26 departments. Record precipitation this rainy season was severe
in 15 municipalities of Boyacá Department and 6 municipalities of Cundinamarca Department. On May 5, the GOC declared the Departments of Boyacá and Cundinamarca areas of "national calamity." According to the
Colombian Red Cross, the floods affected approximately 9,560 people in the 2 departments.
On May 15, U.S. Ambassador William B. Wood issued a disaster declaration due to the magnitude of the damage caused by the flooding. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 to the American Red Cross, in conjunction with
the Colombian Red Cross, for the local purchase of emergency relief supplies.
