Afghanistan - Complex Emergency

Map of Afghanistan
Map of Afghanistan

Regional Team: EMCA

Brief Description: Since late 2001, Kabul’s population has increased from 1.5 million to an estimated 4.5 million people. However, during the same time period, the city size has only expanded by approximately 35 percent. The increased population density has caused overcrowded housing and unsafe settlements.

To address the lack of adequate shelter, OFDA is funding a shelter and settlements project in the Kabul area to assist vulnerable families, including internally displaced persons. The project will provide a minimum of 3,500 households in seven districts of Kabul with safe shelter and training in housing construction that incorporates seismic mitigation techniques. Vulnerable households will also benefit from the rehabilitation of water sources and training programs in health and sanitation. In addition, OFDA will support the establishment of 35 community councils to prioritize and respond to local needs for public services and liaise with municipal officials on shelter issues.
