New training manual on environmental research

Working with key partners, WHO/Europe has just published a manual for young public health students on planning, conducting and publishing the findings of epidemiological research in environmental health. It draws on the experience of the Sumgayit Cancer Study in Azerbaijan; the international and Azeri researchers involved contributed directly to the manual and its toolkit, which includes model templates, budgets, a glossary and potential funding sources.

European city leaders commit to going beyond health care

Mayors and other city leaders have adopted the Zagreb Declaration for Healthy Cities, which moves beyond providing health care to promoting health, preventing disease and disability, and taking systematic action on inequality. City leaders will be advocates and custodians of their citizens’ health.

Climate change affecting health through food and water safety

A World Food Day event held in Rome, Italy today examines the spread of animal diseases such as bluetongue, and the possible increased use of agrichemicals. The event is held jointly by WHO/Europe, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the European Food Safety Authority.

Huge difference in number of psychiatrists across Europe

A new report from WHO/Europe, co-funded by the European Commission, provides previously unavailable data and reveals large gaps in treatment and services. For example, the number of psychiatrists varies from 30 per 100 000 population in Switzerland to 1 per 100 000 in Turkey.

Kyrgyzstan earthquake kills at least 74 people

07 October 2008

WHO has joined other United Nations agencies and donors to assist the Government in helping the survivors of the 6.6-magnitude earthquake in the remote areas near the city of Osh. The authorities have already mobilized helicopters, ambulance brigades and a field hospital, and WHO emergency health kits have been released.

"Early childhood deprivation damages biology"

Dr Harry Burns, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland (United Kingdom), addressing family and community health specialists, reported that babies who experience inadequate and inconsistent parenting respond with biological changes that affect the way they respond to stress and make them vulnerable in later life.

Bulgaria: some progress on Millennium Development Goals

A report from United Nations agencies indicates that Bulgaria now has effective policies and measures to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, but is behind other European Union countries when it comes to child mortality, cervical cancer mortality, tuberculosis incidence and syphilis.
