Bloomington Poplar Bridge Elem.

Poplar Bridge Elementary may have been built in 1962 but after its recent renovations, it feels like a teenager again! Renovations included upgrades to the ventilation, lighting and energy management systems. During these renovations, Bloomington Schools joined the Schools for Energy Efficiency™ Program (SEE), with Hallberg Engineering, Inc. supported by a strategic partnership with Bishop Energy Engineering, The Minnesota Department of Commerce and Rebuild America. The SEE program is a comprehensive energy management partnership that focuses on energy efficiency in K-12 schools. Mike Berg was selected as Bloomington's Energy Efficiency Coordinator to drive the SEE energy efficiency program initiatives. The partnership worked to identify and implement energy efficiency strategies through behavior, operational and physical modifications focusing on a goal of 10% reduction in annual energy usage and an ENERGY STAR rating. To ensure accurate savings measurement, utility tracking and analysis was provided through Bishop Energy Engineering. Mike Berg and Poplar's Chief Engineer, Ron Tomberlin, worked together fine tuning the building's energy management system and increasing operational efficiency through a stringent maintenance program. With the help of the Principal Gail Swor, the students started engaging in energy awareness activities. Student monitors were assigned to classrooms to shut off lights and computers and SEE energy efficiency posters and stickers were mounted throughout the building. The ENERGY STAR success was truly a cross-functional team effort lead by Mike Berg and the staff and students at Poplar Bridge. As a result of their efforts, the Bloomington School District exceeded their quarterly district-wide SEE goals by achieving an energy savings of 15% and receiving an ENERGY STAR rating for Poplar Bridge Elementary School.

Testimonial:
"We could not be more pleased with the SEE* program and results so far! The training, the communications, and the energy tracking has everyone in the district focused on the energy they use and the 80,000 dollars saved the first three months of the program speaks for itself. "
