ENERGY STAR Labeled Building Profile

Glenn Elementary School
306 Glenn Avenue

building

Glenn Elementary School is a 23,677 square foot building serving students in grades K-5. The school has completed one addition since opening in 1968 and currently serves approximately 280 students. In 2006, district officials decided to replace the aging boiler system with a geothermal system. The unique one-pipe design was promised to be as energy efficient as the former four boiler system while providing air conditioning. Performance has far exceeded expectations, and the district has realized significant savings in energy consumption over the previous system.

Faced with a dwindling Operations and Maintenance Fund budget, the Board of Education signed a contract with Energy Education, Inc., an energy management company, in late 2004 to assist with managing utilities and containing costs. The school began to realize savings after applying the methods developed by Energy Education, which included having an energy educator manager work in the district and expert consultants visit frequently to assist with both building and data analysis. As a people-based initiative, the major goal of the program was to motivate each employee and student to think about energy savings.

Employees at this site clearly embraced the energy savings concepts championed by Energy Education and ENERGY STAR. The program worked to improve the energy performance of a diverse set of systems. The building has some rooms that are heated via a hot water boiler system and others warmed through individual room furnaces. Individual window units provide air conditioning. The school took steps to reduce energy use at all times but in particular, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Accordingly, the district is achieving more than $28,000 in annual energy savings. The cooperation of custodial, teaching, cooking, and administrative staff has been crucial to the success of the schools energy management program. Using baseline data from August 1, 2004 through July 31, 2005, Glenn Elementary School earned an ENERGY STAR in 2007 with an impressive energy performance rating of 92.
