Moderator: Rebecca Akins
Rebecca Akins, recently retired, was
curator at the Arizona Museum for Youth for 21 years.
Before moving to Arizona, she was a
University of Denver faculty member
for seven years and is an art historian and
theatrical costume designer with more than 100 shows to her credit.
In 1985 Rebecca received the Arizona Women's Partnership
Governor's Award for "Women Who Create." Her own artwork has
appeared in exhibitions at the Mind's Eye Gallery in Scottsdale, Tucson
Art Museum (Arizona Crafts), the A.S.U. Art Plate Exhibition and Auction
Gala, and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport International Art Program, among
other venues. Rebecca has received numerous AriZoni Theatre Awards for
Excellence in costume design.
Rebecca is an avocational genealogist and has made a number of
presentations for the Springfield Memorial Association, Springfield,
N.C., has had a number of articles published in historical journals and
has recently written the history of the Museum Association of Arizona.
Akins has worked in art education in
Arizona for the last 30 years. She has been active in the local arts
community -- guest-jurying exhibits, serving on the Executive Boards of
the Central Arizona Museum Association, the Tempe Municipal Arts
Commission and the New School of the Arts, and as President of the
Museum Association of Arizona...and still designs an occasional set of
costumes. |
