Cigarette Smoking Among Adults—United States, 2003

MMWR Introduction

For the second consecutive year, more adults have quit smoking than are still smoking according to the article, "Cigarette Smoking Among Adults—United States, 2003," released in the Friday, May 27, 2005, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The report states that approximately 21.6% (45.4 million) of adults are current smokers, down from 22.5% in 2002 and 22.8% in 2001. In 2003, an estimated 45.8 million adults were former smokers in the United States, representing 50.3% of those who had ever smoked.
