MMWR Introduction
According to the article, State-Specific Prevalence of Current Cigarette Smoking Among Adults and
Secondhand Smoke Rules and Policies in Homes and Workplaces—United States, 2005, released in
the October 27, 2006, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) journal,
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), adult smoking prevalence varied considerably
across 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (range: 8.3 percent
to 28.7 percent). In addition, CDC reports significant variation among the proportion of adults protected
by smoke-free workplace policies (range: 54.8 percent to 85.8 percent) and the proportion of adults who
protect themselves and their families from secondhand smoke in the home (range: 63.6 percent to 82.9 percent).
