This interactive tool can be used to track storm surge and floods in real-time on Google Maps before, during and after the storm. The map includes data from streamgages within the Gulf states, which is imperative to local, State and Federal officials in order to forecast floods and coordinate flood-response activities in the affected area. |
Nonreal-time Storm-Tide Sensors Help Tell the Storm Surge Story | |
In addition to conventional streamgages, the USGS is using special miniaturized sensors that record the passage of surge waters produced by Hurricane Ike. USGS scientists are deploying about 60 of these sensors along the Texas and Louisiana Coasts. The deployment will end tonight (Thursday, September 11, 2008). As each sensor is deployed, we will report its location on this map. After the storm passes we will recover the sensors and study the data they have recorded to help USGS, NOAA and other scientists build better surge-prediction models.
