NSBA, whose mission is to foster excellence and equity in public education through school board leadership, is committed to helping school policymakers make informed decisions about health issues affecting the academic achievement and healthy development of students and the effective operation of schools.

NSBA's Program in Action

NSBA is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance categories:

  • Preventing Chronic Diseases: Preventing Initiation and Reducing Tobacco Use.

  • Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs).

For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Preventing Initiation and Reducing Tobacco Use, NSBA is

  • Convening a consortium of national organizations and state affiliates to promote strategies for preventing youth tobacco use and strengthening tobacco-free schools policies.

  • Targeting technical assistance, information, and resources to school boards nationwide to help them establish and strengthen policies and practices to support tobacco-free schools and prevent tobacco use by children and adolescents.

  • Profiling (via website) local school district “best practices” that effectively support policies and practices for preventing tobacco use and establishing tobacco-free schools.

  • Partnering with the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and other parent and family involvement organizations to identify proven strategies that address how schools can target priority health risk behaviors and demonstrate the link between student health and academic achievement.

  • Assessing model or sample policies of state school board associations for alignment with established tobacco policy recommendations and standards.

For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs), NSBA is

  • Using a variety of communication and professional development activities to promote and disseminate Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) policy information and guidance to state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) for addressing health issues.

  • Identifying strategies to increase the participation of local school administrators in implementing practices that support a coordinated and integrated approach for schools in addressing health issues.

  • Establishing a “best practices” website focused on providing local school boards access to success stories and effective practices for addressing priority health issues through a CSHP framework.

  • Identifying strategies that LEAs use to collaborate and coordinate with local community groups to strengthen the ability of SEAs and state school boards associations to provide technical assistance to LEAs and increase effective collaboration regarding health issues.

  • Developing and disseminating model CSHP policies and fact sheets to NSBA Federation Members and state school boards associations’ policy staff to build capacity for integrating CSHP into policy work with local districts and states.

  • Collaborating with the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and other parent and family organizations to develop and implement strategies that engage parents and families with school boards in school health-related policy and practice decisions.

  •
  • In collaboration with the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network and the Rhode Island Department of Education, develop and disseminate policy guidance and enhanced parent information on food allergies and anaphylaxis in schools.
