American Psychological Association*

American Psychological Association (APA) APA advances psychology as a science, a profession, and a means of promoting health, education, and human welfare. APA's 150,000 members constitute the largest scientific and professional association of psychologists worldwide. With CDC funding, the APA is implementing the Healthy Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Students Project.

APA's Program in Action

APA is funded to provide Capacity-Building Assistance for Preventing HIV Infections: Organizations that Serve Young Men Who have Sex with Men, especially African American and Latino Males.

  • Using the CDC-funded Behavioral and Social Science Volunteers Program to strengthen the capacity of 25 organizations serving young men who have sex with men by providing assistance on a wide range of topics that build core competencies for HIV prevention.

  • Building the capacity of four DASH-funded state and local education agencies and at least eight youth-serving organizations (YSOs) through regularly evaluated professional development workshops that train participants to provide HIV prevention activities (and trainings) locally.

  • Maintaining a cadre of at least 14 professional development trainers and a pool of additional volunteers trained by APA to provide capacity-building assistance to YSOs.

  • Providing multifaceted, client-driven capacity building assistance that responds to the HIV-prevention needs of state, local, and territorial education agencies.

  • Partnering with and providing resources to YSOs that serve young men who have sex with men, including those with a focus on African-American and Latino men, in order to reduce disproportionately high rates of HIV among those demographic groups.
