Healthy KidsSouth Dakota’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the South Dakota Department of Education and the South Dakota Department of Health. The CSHP works with schools, local health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to improve the health and academic success of South Dakota’s children through the implementation of the CSHP model. South Dakota receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

South Dakota's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Developing cross-agency partnerships to coordinate activities related to Coordinated School Health and the promotion of PANT.

  • Providing professional development for educators on effective health and physical education curricula, instruction, and assessment.

  • Identifying schools with outstanding school health achievement to receive the Governor’s Healthy School Award.

  • Coordinating a review committee to update the South Dakota health and physical education standards.

  • Providing training, technical assistance, and Native American specific resources on PANT for schools that serve a large number of Native American youth.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Distributing information and resources about effective HIV prevention education within the context of CSH to public, private, and Bureau of Indian schools.

  • Developing a model HIV school policy that includes HIV prevention education, infection control, confidentiality, and other relevant prevention issues.

  • Providing training, technical assistance, and resources on the implementation of effective HIV prevention programs and practices for schools primarily serving Native American youth.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on health risk behaviors that are representative of South Dakota students in grades 9-12.

  • Marketing and distributing the YRBS results.

  • Partnering with key stakeholders to highlight YRBS data for South Dakota.
