Healthy KidsThe Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of Rhode Island’s HIV prevention education program are to build state-level partnerships to increase support for HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy prevention; build the capacity of schools and communities to implement HIV prevention education programs, policies, and practices; and use monitoring and evaluation to promote continuous improvement of state and local HIV prevention initiatives.

Rhode Island's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Using results from an online health teacher survey to develop a professional development plan for comprehensive health education.

  • Providing professional development opportunities by expanding the thrive e-Academy and face-to-face trainings.

  • Providing individualized technical assistance for school districts to strengthen the effectiveness of their HIV prevention policies and practices.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with the School Health Survey group to collect data on risk behaviors that are representative of Rhode Island students in grades 9−12.

  • Producing and disseminating user-friendly reports to summarize YRBS results.

  • Uploading all YRBS data to a Web Query system and conducting training for various audiences on use of the Web Query system.
