Healthy KidsThe Pennsylvania Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Pennsylvania Department of Education HIV prevention education program is to strengthen state-level policies, programs, and support to help schools prevent HIV infection, especially among youth who are at highest risk.

Pennsylvania's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing technical assistance on the statewide HIV prevention policy and the Pennsylvania Academic Standards regarding HIV prevention education, comprehensive school health education, and coordinated school health to administrators, educators, parents, and other key stakeholders.

  • Providing professional development for health educators on effective teaching strategies, skills-based health education and assessment, and implementation of academic standards for health education, safety, and physical education.

  • Distributing mini-grants to schools to improve the quality of local district HIV/STD prevention education programs that target youth at greatest risk for infection.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Pennsylvania to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective partnerships with state and local agencies, non-profit and community organizations, and other stakeholders to support YRBS implementation and data utilization.
