Healthy KidMississippi’s Coordinated School Health Program (CHSP) is a collaborative effort between the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Healthy Schools and the Mississippi Department of Health. Mississippi receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Mississippi's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing technical assistance and resources to support local school districts in implementing and sustaining school health programs based on CDC’s guidelines.

  • Monitoring critical health-related behaviors among youth and the effectiveness of school policies and programs in promoting health-enhancing behaviors.

  • Establishing partnerships with state agencies, institutions of higher learning, private and public entities, and organizations to further CSHP and PANT initiatives.

  • Conducting regional trainings for school district personnel on data collection, wellness policies, physical education, and comprehensive health education.

  • Establishing a speakers’ bureau of educators, health professionals, and health advocates who can provide professional development and technical assistance to local school districts and schools on CSHP and PANT.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing training on the development and implementation of a communicable disease policy at the local school district level.

  • Distributing and administering mini-grant funds to school districts located in areas with elevated rates of HIV/STD infection to establish comprehensive HIV prevention programs for school-age youth.

  • Developing a marketing plan for communicating the importance of HIV prevention education.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Mississippi to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Developing an annual YRBS report with input from partner organizations.

  • Sharing the YRBS results with stakeholders throughout the state.
