Healthy KidsThe Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Missouri HIV Prevention Program is to increase the capacity of school personnel to provide skills-based HIV prevention education, disseminate information about effective school health HIV prevention education to local education agencies and other key stakeholders, and establish and maintain collaborative relationships with personnel from state and local agencies to ensure that effective HIV/STD prevention education is provided for Missouri youth.

Missouri's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing training and technical assistance for school staff on implementing effective HIV prevention education programs.

  • Disseminating information on effective HIV prevention education programs and policies to school staff and community members.

  • Collaborating with external partners to share resources, disseminate information, and ensure that effective HIV/STI prevention education is provided to Missouri youth.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with the Office on Smoking and Health to administer the YRBS and the Youth Tobacco Survey simultaneously to minimize the burden on individual schools.

  • Providing professional development to local education agencies on how to use the YRBS data for development of policies, curricula, and programs.
