Healthy AdolescentsMiami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools HIV/AIDS Education Program are to strengthen HIV prevention education in grades K–12, strengthen procedures to monitor the availability and adequacy of health education, enhance HIV prevention education through community collaborations, and continuously evaluate programmatic activities to inform future planning.

Miami-Dade County's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Integrating HIV, STD and unintended pregnancy prevention education into existing health education and other core subject areas in grades K–12.
     
  • Researching, developing and assessing district AIDS policies and procedures.
     
  • Collaborating with others from the school district, local health agency, institutions of higher education, community organizations, parents, and students, to develop, implement and evaluate HIV, STD and unintended pregnancy prevention education activities.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Miami-Dade County students in grades 9–12.
     
  • Creating a YRBS District Statistical Manual that uses graphs to depict youth risk behaviors in the county across time.
     
  • Distributing the YRBS District Statistical Manual to all school administrators, school decision makers, and relevant community organizations across the district.
