Healthy KidsThe Delaware Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). In collaboration with numerous community partners, the Delaware HIV Prevention Program plans and implements effective policies and educational strategies to prevent HIV infection among youth and implements targeted strategies to reduce disparities among youth disproportionately affected by HIV infection. In addition, data obtained through the YRBS enable the Delaware Department of Education to address the health needs of children, which can lead to improvements in academic readiness and success.

Delaware's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Ensuring that schools provide age-appropriate, culturally sensitive HIV prevention education in compliance with state regulations.
  • Providing professional development opportunities and follow-up support for school educators on implementing effective HIV prevention education for youth with developmental disabilities.
  • Establishing an HIV-Youth Development work group to determine needs and priorities for preventing HIV among youth.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with the University of Delaware Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies to administer the YRBS to students in grades 9-12.

  • Developing presentations to promote the YRBS to school district administrators, school personnel, and community partners.

  • Developing and disseminating charts, graphs, reports and web-based products to summarize the YRBS results.
