Healthy KidConnecticut receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Connecticut’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the state’s Department of Education and Department of Public Health. The goals of the CSH and HIV prevention education programs are to strengthen the statewide infrastructure for building partnerships to effectively implement CSHPs and HIV prevention education programs and to increase the effectiveness of policies and practices to promote physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use prevention and HIV prevention among students.

Connecticut's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Planning and conducting the first Annual Coordinators’ Meeting for district-level education and health supervisors.

  • Creating a summary of Connecticut school health tools, a quick-reference guide detailing the state’s existing guidance tools.

  • Drafting model state- and local-level policies to promote healthy eating and physical activity.

  • Creating an award program to recognize local schools that implement model coordinated school health programs.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Revising the current HIV/STD cadre training modules and resource packets.

  • Conducting a Training of Trainers (TOT) for all HIV/STD cadres on addressing prevention needs of youth that are disproportionately affected by HIV, including persons of color, sexual minority youth, and women.

  • Conducting professional development for school district and community-based personnel on research-based programs through the cadre of trainers programs.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Connecticut to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Partnering with the Department of Public Health to administer the YRBS.

  • Conducting an awareness campaign to educate school officials and interested parties about the YRBS, its contents and the 2009 implementation plans.
