Healthy KidsCalifornia’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the California Department of Education and Department of Public Health. The CSHP works with schools, school districts, county offices of education, local health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to improve the health and academic success of California’s children through implementation of the CSHP model. California receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

California's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing technical expertise, support, and information related to proposals for legislation, regulations, or policies that promote CSHPs, particularly in the areas of physical education and physical activity, health education, nutrition, and healthy school environments.

  • Collaborating with three targeted counties to use California’s Health Framework and Building Infrastructure for Coordinated School Health: California’s Blueprint to guide the development and implementation of their nutrition and physical activity programs.

  • Partnering with the American Cancer Society to implement Coordinated School Health Leadership Institutes to assist local school districts in developing an effective CSHP.

  • Disseminating information on available data and resources related to CSH and PANT, including youth development models, school wellness policies, and strategies for addressing health disparities, through bi-monthly emails and various listservs.

  • Collaborating with the California School Board Association to provide professional development and follow-up support to school board members and school administrators on implementing a coordinated school health approach in school districts.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Disseminating policy, program, and research information to support California’s county offices of education in developing and implementing quality HIV prevention education programs.

  • Providing professional development, technical assistance, and follow-up support for health educators and other relevant staff in three targeted counties on the California Education Code and HIV prevention education.

  • Collaborating with members of the California Adolescent Sexual Health Workgroup to develop statewide HIV/AIDS/STD and teen birth data sets for use in program planning.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout California to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Distributing survey results from the YRBS to statewide agencies, schools, local school administrators, the state Community Planning Group, and other agencies that work with youth.

  • Using YRBS data to inform and improve policies and programs affecting youth.
