Healthy KidsWest Virginia currently receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, prevent HIV infection, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). West Virginia’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the West Virginia Department of Education and West Virginia Bureau of Public Health. The mission of West Virginia’s Office of Healthy Schools is to provide leadership, training, and support for schools and their communities to improve collaboration and ensure the health and educational achievement of children in a safe, nurturing, and disciplined environment.

West Virginia's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Coordinating state-level data collection activities and establishing on-going processes for selecting samples, collecting data, interpreting results, and sharing data.

  • Collaborating with the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health, the Governor’s Healthy Lifestyle Committee, the Governor, and the Legislature to establish a state plan for CSHP/PANT.

  • Conducting an annual review of all CSHP/PANT laws and policies to assess the need for revisions or additional school health policies that address CSHP/PANT.

  • Establishing a school health communications workgroup to review existing communication efforts and develop comprehensive CSHP/PANT communication messages targeting local, state and national audiences.

  • Providing technical assistance to all 55 local education agencies to increase their capacity to implement specific, effective CSHP/PANT policies and practices.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing technical assistance to all 55 local education agencies to increase their capacity to implement effective HIV prevention education policies and practices.

  • Conducting professional development opportunities on current evidence-based curricula for classroom teachers and others responsible for HIV prevention education in schools.

  • Developing an HIV strategic plan targeting local education agencies with the greatest disparities in HIV, STIs, and unintended pregnancies.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in coordination with the Youth Tobacco Survey to collect health risk behavior data representative of West Virginia students in grades 9–12.

  • Developing reports and presentations to summarize the results of the YRBS.

  • Collaborating with the WV Bureau of Public Health and the West Virginia Prevention Research Center to disseminate the results of the YRBS on the Web site.
