YRBS Coordinator—Position currently vacant

Healthy KidsVirginia receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Virginia Department of Education HIV prevention education program is to increase the availability, quality, and effectiveness of programs designed to promote Family Life Education and prevent HIV infection, other STDs, and unintended teenage pregnancy, especially among youth who are at high risk.

Virginia's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Developing a statewide plan to improve the effectiveness, quality, and availability of professional development on HIV, STIs, and teen pregnancy prevention education.

  • Providing Family Life Education workshops for district and school staff, school nurses, and School Health Advisory Board members.

  • Revising guidance documents for Family Life Education and School Health Advisory Boards.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in Virginia high schools, through a collaborative effort between Virginia’s Department of Health and Department of Education to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.

  • Developing a YRBS Webpage to disseminate YRBS planning and implementation activities.
