Healthy KidsThe Cherokee Nation Health Services Group and the Cherokee Nation Education Services Group are collaborating with multiple community partners to improve the health of young people in the 14-county Cherokee Nation Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area (TJSA) in northeastern Oklahoma. The Cherokee Nation receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Cherokee Nation's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Administering the Cherokee Nation School Health Inventory in area schools to determine student risk behaviors and track program outcomes.
     
  • Selecting a school-based HIV prevention curriculum and implementing the curriculum in area schools.
     
  • Distributing model HIV prevention policies, recommendations, and guidelines to area schools.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborating with multiple community partners to promote and plan the YRBS.
     
  • Administering the YRBS in high schools within the Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.
     
  • Collaborating with partners to develop a plan for disseminating YRBS results.
