Healthy KidsThe Puerto Rico Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Puerto Rico’s HIV prevention program, the Change II program, seeks to prevent HIV infection among students in grades 7−12.

Puerto Rico's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development to health teachers on HIV prevention education.
     
  • Training a cadre of health teachers to develop teaching and leadership skills related to HIV prevention education.
     
  • Organizing community empowerment conferences aimed at informing parents about HIV prevention and recruiting parents to support HIV prevention education program efforts.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in high schools throughout Puerto Rico to obtain data representative of all students in grades 9−12.
     
  • Creating a report that effectively communicates YRBS results.
     
  • Disseminating YRBS results to stakeholders across Puerto Rico.
